Giving Tuesday

Giving back to our local community has always been a key tenant of our village. For us, it's not regulated to just one day. This pandemic has led to people needing more than ever before. If you aren't sure where to start, we have compiled a list of our favorite local non-profits we like to give back to.

Second Story in Vienna. "Second Story for Young Mothers provides housing, counseling and training to homeless women age 16 to 24 who are pregnant or have young children. We put an emphasis on parenting skills, completing an education, job readiness, and basic self-sufficiency so that young women will be able to support themselves and their children — breaking the cycle of poverty, abuse, or homelessness."

Postpartum VA "Postpartum Support Virginia’s MISSION is to help new and expectant mothers and their families overcome anxiety, depression, and other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). Postpartum Support Virginia’s VISION is that all childbearing women in Virginia will receive information about perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and have access to help."

BRAWS in Vienna "Six years ago, our founder Holly Seibold wanted to help women in local homeless shelters. She held a small collection drive at her house, inviting friends and neighbors and collected over 300 new bras, underwear, pads, and tampons. Holly brought the items to 3 shelters in the area and soon other shelters were calling her. She quickly discovered that these items are: rarely donated, expensive for shelters to replenish and are not covered by food stamps. Since then, BRAWS has expanded our services- to include monthly deliveries of menstrual products to area shelters and school pantries. In 2018, we were able to serve over 80 shelters and schools, help 6,000 women and girls, reach: 21 counties, 10 school districts, 6 states, and distribute over two million new and unopened pads, tampons, underwear and bras."

Food for Others/Fairfax Diapers "More than 70,000 people live in poverty in Fairfax County, one of the Nation’s wealthiest regions. Food for Others distributes food to more than 2,600 local families in need each week. We are able to provide food with help from the community."

Cleaning for a Reason "Cleaning for a Reason provides free home cleaning to patients battling cancer. When cancer makes life at home difficult, our trusted network of residential cleaners, cleaning industry volunteers, and community volunteers come together to support cancer patients and their families."

Falls Church Education Foundation "The mission of the Falls Church Education Foundation is to ensure our students are prepared to effectively meet the challenges of the 21st century. The foundation focuses on, equity of access, staff readiness, and preparing students to function in the 21st century"

The MariH Center "In 1974 we opened our doors to serve pregnant women and their children, to give options especially for women in crisis. We are still in operation because we want to serve and give you what is best for you and your family."

Creative Cauldron "Guided by the belief that creativity is a fundamental need of the human spirit, Creative Cauldron is dedicated to providing affordable, enriching, and diverse experiences in the performing and visual arts to Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, DC community. Creative Cauldron gives people of all ages, incomes and backgrounds opportunities to connect and grow through the arts. We create original productions, present a broad array of art and artists, and offer transformative educational programs in an intimate and collaborative atmosphere."

This list is by no means comprehensive of all of the wonderful non-profits in our community, but it's a good place to start if you aren't sure where to!
